A recent article from Science Daily discusses a new type of concrete being developed out of waste products from the food industry, including sunflower seed husks. According to the article, “Sunflower seed husks, a huge waste product of the vegetable oil and food industry, could be used as an environmentally friendly filler, or aggregate, for concrete according to Turkish researchers writing in the International Journal of Environment and Waste Management.”

As costs of conventional materials are rising, finding these new solutions is critical. Concrete in particular is a material that can be manipulated in so many ways, so researchers are constantly at work to find materials that are not only cost-effective but beneficial to the end product. Interestingly enough, these sunflower seed husks reduces the the density as well as boosts the resistance to cracking of concrete. What a breakthrough!

As a Utah industrial material handling company, we are constantly searching for more effective, efficient, and ethical ways of creating quality materials. When we here news like this, it only gives us more urgency to continue revolutionizing the construction and engineering industries. We’re excited to see where this breakthrough takes us.
